Once in Pennsylvania
Posted by Minister of Information on Sunday, 6 January 2008
I lived in Pennsylvania (near Philadelphia) from September of 1995 until June of 1998. While there, I attended Villanova University for my masters’ degree, and later worked at Royal Bank. There certainly were ups and downs, but all in all, they were three terrific years. I believe I left a piece of my heart there when I moved back to Massachusetts.
While at Villanova, I hung around with some great people. One night, shortly before Christmas break, and after drinking at a local bar, we all reconvened at an all-night diner. As we walked in, I noticed a man sitting at the counter. He was dressed in ragged clothes, obviously drunk or high, and clearly hadn’t showered for some time. I was drunk as well, but dressed in fine clothes from Abercrombie & Fitch and L.L. Bean. I paused at the door as my friends went on to the empty booths and I watched this man. After a long sip of black coffee from a small white mug, he pulled a white envelope from his army-jacket pocket. He slid it across the counter towards one of the young and pretty waitresses.
“This is for you, to say thanks,” he said humbly, sadly, sheepishly.
The girl, astonished, took the envelope and replied: “Oh! Thank you so much, that’s so nice of you!” Her pleasant and appreciative tone covered over a deep dismissiveness. At that moment I read her thoughts: “A damnable drunk.”
I thought the same thing myself. A damnable drunk. A waste of space who probably spends his time drinking, and then bothering the waitresses at this hole-in-the-wall diner on Route 30.
Every day since that moment, I think of that man and I condemn myself for my arrogance, for my inhumanity, for my lack of compassion.
Looking back, I see a man — probably alone, probably isolated — reaching out for some compassion. A man trying to, perhaps, reconnect with his fellow humans. Who can tell what horrors he may have suffered? And there we were, the waitress and I, condemning him for his faults while indulging our own.
May God forgive me for looking down on a fellow human being without cause, without reason, and certainly without justice.
