I have a great interest in national anthems. Here are some:

1. The United States of America

2. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

3. Canada

3. The French Republic

4. The Federal Republic of Germany

(I mistook this for the anthem during the Nazi period; however, according to several internet sites, this is the official anthem of Germany — “The Song of Germany.” I confess to some confusion on this point.)

5. The Republic of Austria — according to “The Sound of Music” (one of my favorites!). This is Edelweiss!

(Not really Austria’s national anthem, but who can resist Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews?)

6. New Zealand
The New Zealand National Anthem, “God Defend New Zealand,” is rather unique in that the first stanza is sung in the Maoiri language, and the second in English. Very interesting.

7. Commonwealth of Australia.
New Zealand’s is better, I think.
